Transportation and Accommodation in South Korea

Updated on Aug 16, 2024 · By ENKOR

Logistics and Transportation

Navigating a new country can be daunting, but South Korea's efficient and well-organized transportation system makes it easier. From subways to buses and taxis, here’s how to get around South Korea like a local.

Public Transportation

South Korea boasts one of the most comprehensive and efficient public transportation systems in the world, particularly in major cities like Seoul, Busan, and Daegu.

Bus Services

Buses are another reliable option, covering both urban and suburban areas. They can be a bit trickier to navigate due to less English signage, but major routes and destinations are often displayed in English in larger cities.

For longer distances, intercity buses are an excellent choice. They connect major cities and towns, offering a cheaper alternative to trains. The bus terminals are well-organized, and tickets can be purchased at the terminal or online. The buses are comfortable and often equipped with amenities like Wi-Fi.

Subway Systems

The subway is perhaps the most convenient way to travel within cities. Seoul’s subway system is extensive, with multiple lines connecting virtually every part of the city. The subways are clean, punctual, and user-friendly. Signage is in both Korean and English, making it easier for foreigners to navigate.

For seamless travel, get a T-Money card, a rechargeable transportation card that can be used on buses, subways, and even some taxis. You can purchase and recharge a T-Money card at convenience stores and subway stations. It also offers discounted fares compared to single-journey tickets.

Train Travel

For fast travel between cities, the KTX (Korea Train Express) is your best bet. The KTX is a high-speed train that connects major cities such as Seoul, Busan, and Daejeon. It’s fast, efficient, and comfortable, with several classes of service to choose from. Book your tickets in advance, especially during holidays, to secure a seat. You can book tickets online or at train stations.

For more scenic or leisurely travel, consider taking the Mugunghwa or Saemaul trains. These are regular trains that offer a slower, but often more scenic, journey at a lower cost.

Car Rental and Driving

Renting a car can provide more flexibility, especially if you plan to explore rural areas or go on road trips. However, driving in South Korea requires some preparation.

Requirements

To rent a car, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Korean driver’s license. Rental agencies will also require a credit card for the deposit.

Driving Tips

  • Traffic Rules: Familiarize yourself with local traffic rules, such as speed limits and parking regulations. Speed cameras are prevalent, and fines can be hefty.
  • Navigation Apps: Use apps like KakaoMap or Naver Map for accurate directions and real-time traffic updates. These apps are more reliable than international ones like Google Maps in South Korea.
  • City Driving: Be prepared for aggressive driving in big cities like Seoul. Traffic can be dense, and parking can be challenging to find.

Accommodation Options

When it comes to where to stay, South Korea offers a variety of options to suit all budgets and preferences.
